John Perkins has recently returned from a trip to Tanzania. Below, he provides NEC Online with a brief report of his time there – you can view a full gallery of John’s photos from this part of his trip here.
Jane Caine and I went to Arusha in Tanzania to help support the teachers in Tuishime Primary school which has been sponsored by a Christian trust in the UK. We were at the school from Jan 24th till Feb 7th 2015. We were warmly welcomed and spent the first week mainly observing and unearthing lots of unused “treasures” in store there. There were a fair few visual aids, books, games and other resources which had
never been used for various reasons – mainly because they did not know how. Three days of testing this week limited our time in the classrooms but we were never idle!
On the middle Saturday we conducted a workshop so the teachers could attend without their teaching responsibilities and we all enjoyed this – there were hoots of laughter while they learnt how to play bingo with mathematical shapes! Then in the second week we helped the teachers put all that they had learnt into practice and showed how to make their own resources like number fans and paper clocks etc. At the end we left them with a report commending them on some things and leaving them with suggestions and ideas to think about on such varied issues such as differentiating work or the importance of giving thanks for their food!
