“But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today’, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” Hebrews 3v13
I have always been struck by this verse in Hebrews. The author clearly expects Christians to be in contact with other Christians on a daily basis – not just, say, weekly!
That is a challenge during this time when we haven’t even been free to meet as a church weekly, let alone daily!
Looking through the regulations currently in force in Wales, it is clear that despite the permission for churches to “reopen”, as the regulations put it, we are certainly not free all to sit in a building together and talk with one another.
So how can we “encourage one another daily”?
We need to be creative in making use of the opportunities that do exist. We can talk on the phone. We can talk using Zoom (other video conferencing technologies are available!). We can message one another in various ways. We can even write to each other, or send each other cards.
But the major way the government has opened up for us to have face to face contact with each other, to be able to actually sit down and talk with one another freely (albeit from a distance of 2m!) is to meet up (just two households at a time, or two “extended households” at a time) in gardens or public open spaces.
Weather permitting(!), can I urge you to make use of this opportunity. Who could you visit today, or encourage to visit you? How could you make that a time of spiritual encouragement?
Tim
