“To those who have been called, who are loved in God and kept for Jesus Christ”. Jude 1
We are going through a very bewildering time. For many of us, our lives have been turned upside down in many ways in recent months.
In such times it is easy for us to be confused, as though we can hardly think straight anymore. We struggle to make sense of things and to understand just what is going on.
It is easy to get our minds fixed on the things that we don’t understand – for them to fill our thoughts. And we feel very disorientated.
At such times I find it helpful to seek, with God’s help, to focus on the things that I do understand. Then, by God’s grace, I can know that whatever storms are raging around me, I am standing on solid rock.
And Jude starts his letter by reminding us of some very, very solid rock under our feet.
We have been “called”. God has called us as we have heard the gospel proclaimed to us. We have heard of our sin, we have heard of the Saviour, our wonderful Lord Jesus Christ, we have been given grace to respond in faith. God’s call has been effective in our hearts.
We are “loved”. God loves us. He has loved you so much that he sent his only Son to die to save you. That is the ultimate, irrefutable proof that God loves you. He will not stop loving you. You “are loved in God the Father”, and God never changes his mind. He won’t love you one day and not love you the next day.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life … nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”. Romans 8v38-39.
And we are “kept”. The greatest power in the universe has hold of you. There is absolutely nothing that will be able to wrench you out of his hands.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, there is solid rock under our feet. You are utterly secure in Christ. Focus on the certainties, and leave God to deal with the uncertainties.
Tim
